Learning new skills as an adult
Linda Niederberger
Grownups shouldn’t stop learning and that’s what the Festival of Adult Learning Ahurei Ākonga is all about.
Tūrangi Reo student Linda Niederberger can testify to the benefits of giving it a go.
The pharmacy worker has been a student of Moepuke Manunui-Church since 2022.
She says the free te reo Māori language classes offered by REAP have “significantly enriched my life”.
She says the classes provide a supportive environment for learning.
“They have been a safe space where I could freely practise and make mistakes, learning alongside others who share my enthusiasm.
“One of the most valuable outcomes has been the boost in my confidence to speak Te Reo Māori and apply my learning beyond the classroom.
“This newfound confidence has been particularly rewarding in my work, at a community pharmacy”.
She says she has been able to connect in a more meaningful way with the community.
“Overall, the classes have not only enhanced my language skills but also fostered a deeper connection to my community and culture, making a positive impact on both my personal and professional life.”
Adult Learners Week runs from September 8–14 and is a UNESCO initiative celebrated in more than 40 countries.
In Taupō, REAP will be hosting a Festival of Adult Learning at its premises on 73 Titiraupenga St, alongside Budget House, Literacy Aotearoa and Te Hapori Ora.
The event runs from 10am-2pm.
