Taupō News is here to keep the local community informed about what is happening, right across the district, from Tūrangi to Reporoa, Mangakino to Taupō township.
Our flagship publication Taupō & Tūrangi News is distributed into letterboxes, shops and other public places, like the i-Site and AC Baths.
We print about 17,500 copies each week and in addition to 13,500 copies placed in urban and rural letterboxes, a further 4000 copies is proactively picked up by readers from the nearest outlet. Most outlets have none, or only a handful of copies left at the end of each week.
Thanks to our digital marketing partner Korio, we also provide our news online via www.tauponews.co.nz, with important breaking news as it happens.
This is all provided free of charge to readers, thanks to advertisers who see the value of our huge local audience and comprehensive reach.
We provide a range of advertising and marketing products, from public notices in the classified section of the paper, to display advertising, sponsorship of specilised pages like puzzles or What’s On, a multi-page campaign or even a separate publication that can be inserted into the paper or delivered separately.
Our online advertising includes a range of eye-catching and interactive options, on the website and in our emailed newsletters.
Recent history
In 2024 Stuff closed the long-standing Taupō Times newspaper and at the end of the same year NZME announced it was also closing down the Taupō & Tūrangi Herald, which had been published under various mastheads since 1958.
That would have left Taupō without a newspaper or even a single fulltime journalist but former NZME Waikato News Director Dan Hutchinson and wife Tracey decided that just wasn’t acceptable in their home town. Regional areas of New Zealand need a voice too!
Despite difficult economic times for the media industry and the country in general, the paper was still turning a profit, so they purchased it for a nominal sum NZME, rebranded it and relaunched it at the start of 2025 as Taupō & Tūrangi News.
We believe community newspapers have the same important role to play as they always have. Unlike daily, subscribed newspapers, a community newspaper just needs to be freely available, with interesting content, so it is widely read.
No other media gets into homes like a community newspaper and there is nothing like seeing people in your area acknowledged through the power and visual impact of large-format printing.
We believe the future is bright for a hybrid news offering of a community newspaper and the modern convenience and timeliness of news on your favourite digital device.
