Calling all sports people

Paris Paralympics medallist Anna Taylor speaks at the 2024 Taupō District Sports Awards.

People have just over two weeks to get their nominations in for the Taupō District Sports Awards.

Run by the Lake Taupō District Sports Advisory Council in conjunction with the Gary Ramsay Charitable Trust, the theme for this year is Women in Sport, with a focus on the grass roots level of sport for men, women and youth, in addition to the elite national and international performers.

The awards will be announced on Friday, October 31 at a formal function at Wairakei Resort.

The evening will recognise and share development of sport at a club and volunteer level, celebrate success across multiple junior athlete categories, honour sportspeople performing nationally and internationally and support athletes through the awarding of scholarships and grants.

Advisory Council Kiwisport Coordinator Sue MacLean says the evening is also a chance for community sport to shine and three clubs will do a short video presentation showcasing what they do.

She says they had 68 nominations last year, which was good, but numbers were in the single digits up until a week ago.

It is not unusual for nominations to all come in at the last minute, but it would be helpful if they could be processed earlier.

Tickets for the awards evening will go on sale about mid-September.
