What’s on in Taupō District

The Jowett Car Club holds its weekend away. in Taupō this weekend.

Seventy-year-old cars will be spotted around Taupō on Saturday and Sunday November 22-23 when the Jowett Car Club holds its weekend away.

Jowett Cars were made in Bradford, England in 1910, more than 100 years ago and continued until 1953.

The vehicles that will be remembered most in New Zealand are the Javelin saloon, Jupiter sports car and the little two-cylinder Bradford trucks and vans, all from the 48-53 era. All models had the trademark horizontally opposed engine.

The Jowett popularity was most prominent in 1951 and cars attending this weekend are from this era and are more than 70 years old.

Arriving Saturday, the weekend will consist of visits to local attractions, a lake cruise, and cars will be on display at the Sunday market.

The best place to see the cars will be at the Taupō Market on Sunday at Riverside Park, from 9am-11.30am

Hunting event ends with community BBQ

October 1 - November 15: Outdoor clothing company Stoney Creek – through the Our Backyard Trust - has teamed up with the Sika Foundation and Helisika to organise the Sika Hind Hunt.

The hunting side of the contest is now over but the event culminates in a community barbecue with lots of fun activities and a prize giving event on Saturday.

The contest has a range of categories for hunters who shoot hinds, with prize packages of up to $8500, and a total prize pool of $80,000.

There are also non-hunting categories including a ‘Best Live Stag Photo’ contest and activities for children, like a colouring contest and spot prizes.

The Sika Hind Hunt culminates in a barbecue this Saturday.

It is more than just a hunting contest and has been launched to help reduce the sika deer population in the Kaimanawa and Kaweka Forests.

The sika population in the two forests is the first to be proposed as a Herd of Special Interest, with Minister of Hunting & Fishing James Meager beginning the consultation process in April this year.

The goal is to protect the natural biodiversity of the whenua/land by actively managing the over-abundance of deer in the area, while also acknowledging the recreational and food resource provided by the animals.
