Taupō Racing Club is gearing up for its richest prize ever with $100,000 up for grabs in the Harcourts Taupō Cup.
The club’s biggest raceday of the year, on December 28, will also see a $50,000 bonus handed out to the winner of the inaugural Northern Country Cups Series, with the final race also on the day.
There are other big prizes on offer for owners too with $40,000 up for grabs in another race, for horses that have come up through the grades at Taupō, in preference over the spring.
Another $30,000 is on offer in an open sprint for the Poverty Bay Turf Club, also being held in Taupō on the day.
Taupō Racing Club president Terry Campbell says New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing got behind the concept of the Northern Cup, after a successful series in the South Island last year.
There was another qualifier at the Waipakarau Cup on Sunday and then another at Tauranga two weeks before the Taupō Cup.
“So, what we're hoping is there'll be a swag of people. There's double the points or more to win at Taupō.”
That means the winner of the bonus $50,000 will likely be decided at Taupō.
“One guy's already won the Fielding Cup and the Matamata Cup, so he's in a great position to carry on.
“They had a similar one in the bottom of the South Island last year and on the (final race) day there were five horses could have won the bonus.
“So, all roads lead back to here for the North Island. A lot of money floating around for prizes. It'll be great interest. And it's on a Sunday, which is a very big day for TAB.”
It’s a major event on the Taupō calendar for locals too, with a day of fun in a relaxed environment.
“There's all sorts of packages and prizes and umbrellas you can hire, so you can make yourself comfortable.”
People can also get in early and grab a good spot to put up their gazebo, plus there are food vendors lined up, “and all sorts of beverages”.
There is free entertainment for the kids in the form of bouncy castles, storytelling and face painting and plenty at stake for adults too, including the Harcourts Fashion in the Field, Punters Club and live music.
