Tūrangi celebrates top sportspeople

Tūrangi’s sporting elite are recognised at the annual awards.

Tūrangi’s Annual Sports Awards were held at the Tūrangi Golf Club on October 17 with sports across the Southern Lake being represented through nominees and supporters.

Lesley Hardisty from Tūrangi Tongariro Sports Foundation says Tūrangi Squash Rackets Club dominated the 2025 club awards, enjoying not just growth in club numbers and club improvements, but also in player progress.

The Premier Award was won by karate’s Lisa Bell – “a well-deserving winner who has worked hard to achieve outstanding success in her field regionally, nationally and internationally”.

Judges say they had had some difficult decisions to make with quality nominations and some very close results to call.

Young Sportsperson winner was rugby union and league player Rauaiterangi Harris and will be one to watch over the next few years.

As will squash and rugby player Amy Smith who is the Junior Sportsperson winner.

Josh Scotwell introduced the audience to the world of climbing and shared the climbing experiences of he and wife Synove, along with some spectacular photos.

They also hosted the Youth Lead Nationals this year for NZ Team Selection at their premises in Tūrangi.

Te Takinga New with his considerable knowledge of both the area, people and sport of Tūrangi was an excellent MC and contributed to the evening’s success Lesley says.
