The RSA for everyone

‘Have you served and how can we help you?’ That’s the simple motto that has served Mangakino RSA well for 80 years.

President Claire Middlemiss says on February 7, 1946, a small group of returned servicemen established a branch at 46 Wairenga Rd and they are still there.
Today, they are still a very active organisation with 43 members, including 10 veterans and with ages ranging from 60 to over 90-years-old.
“Some have walked the fields of battle, others have patrolled our seas, and many have served here at home.
“Each one of them carries a unique story, and each one deserves our respect, our gratitude and our support.”
Every Friday members are selling raffle tickets to raise money for a hot Sunday meal delivered to veterans, also thanks to the generosity of ATA’s Bar and Eatery.
Claire says the meals are tasty and nutritious and they “lift spirits as much as they fill bellies”.
Other fundraising initiatives include firewood sales, community and business donations which help with things like home modifications, medical equipment and other needs.
Every Anzac Day, in front of the large rocks outside the Mangakino Club, more than 200 people gather to “honour those who served and sacrificed”.
“Afterwards we share a humble cup of tea the Mangakino Club which we share facilities with, connecting past, present and future.”
They are always looking for new members, and you don’t have to be a veteran to join. Friends, family and other community members are all welcome, Claire says.
