Switch off at Digital Detox Day

If you or your family are guilty of spending too much time on devices, several of Taupō’s community groups have organised an antidote.

A Digital Detox Day being run from roughly midday September 26 to midday September 27 at various venues in town will present alternatives to scrolling and posting and instead prompt families to participate in new experiences.

The community building exercise is designed to encourage adults and children to try something new during 24 hours in the first weekend of the September/October School holidays says Creative Taupō chair Toni Sullivan who has seen the idea used elsewhere.

Creative Taupō has co-opted its fellow strategic partners, Sport Waikato, Bike Taupō, Greening Taupō and the likes of Anamata to run events from as short as half an hour for up to four hours, many free.

The groups, working alongside the Taupō District Council, hope the day will be a wonderful opportunity for groups to get involved in promoting themselves and showing potential new members what they have to offer, as well as creating a memorable experience for the community.

Sullivan says the day has 13 events listed on Saturday, with some kicking off before noon, and five on Sunday. A number at Riverside Park on Saturday – free concert, colour run and sports and games – are dependent on the day being fine.

“Digital Detox Day is about getting individuals connected, families enjoying time together, meeting new people, conversation, learning, laughing and enjoying the great place that we call home,” Sullivan says.

The schedule of events and activities will mean people can choose what they want to try, she says.
