Fisherman’s favourite spot
A new chapter has begun for one of Tūrangi's most popular hospitality venues with Angler's Table now open in the former Creel Café.
Tūrangi hospitality identities, chef Andrew Wood and wife Liliana Calva, have poured their hearts into the refurbishment of the historic Taupahi Road property which also includes a fishing and tackle shop.
The opening was marked with a blessing, attended by around 40 friends, family and supporters who helped bring the vision to life.
Guests included Carol Harwood, one of the original owners of Creel Tackle House shop, who shared memories of the site's history and its longstanding connection to the local community dating back to the early 1920s and the establishment of the original fishing tackle and guiding operation.
The opening has generated considerable excitement among food lovers and fishing enthusiasts alike, both locally and further afield – a testament to the enduring legacy of the former Creel Café and the anticipation surrounding its next chapter.
Destination Great Lake Taupō General Manager Patrick Dault says Andrew and Liliana’s reputation at Hare & Copper is already well established so it’s fantastic to see their talents applied to the Angler’s Table.
Located behind Tūrangi's historic fishing and tackle shop, Angler's Table honours the heritage of the former Creel Café while introducing a fresh dining experience focused on locally sourced ingredients and elevated café fare.
Andrew says the menu showcases "rural ingredients with a big city twist".
Highlights will include a rotating wild game pie, salads featuring produce from Taupō suppliers Misfit Garden, and sausages sourced from Heritage Meat.
"We wanted to create a space that celebrates the character of Tūrangi while offering something special for both locals and visitors," Andrew says.
"The support we've received throughout this journey has been incredible, and we're excited to finally welcome people through the doors."
Angler's Table at 187 Taupahi Road, Tūrangi, is open from 7.30am – 3pm.
