Eight dates in one night

A new singles event concept is being launched this month, offering a relaxed and grown-up alternative to traditional speed dating.

Organiser of the Small Plates Speed Dates event Julian Bishop, says the singles taking part get dinner in the form of eight small dishes, each shared with a different person.

That way, people get conversation in an easy setting, providing real connection for Taupō singles.

The experience hinges on specialised kitchen technology, thanks to Cobb & Co's CVap and Thermodyne holding systems.

The systems allow up to 40 meals to be held for several hours without drying out or overcooking.

Therefore each small plate can be served smoothly during the hosted rotations, without compromising food quality.

By solving the “logistical nightmare of serving multiple courses to a rotating room of guests”, this technology enables a “low-pressure format for human connection”.

"Enjoy a multi-course meal with multiple opportunities to connect."

There will be monthly events based around various age brackets and exact options depend on an equal number arriving for the event.

There is a waitlist system built into the booking form for matches.

He says unlike traditional speed dating, where conversations can feel rushed or take place in a noisy bar setting, Small Plates Speed Dates gives guests a new conversation with each course.

“One group remains seated while the other rotates between rounds, allowing people to enjoy thoughtful conversation, good food, and a fresh opportunity to connect throughout the night.”

Julian says the fresh format was developed after the success of recent Mix & Mingle events at Cobb & Co Taupō, acting as a direct response to feedback from local singles who wanted more quality one-on-one time and better opportunities for genuine conversation.

"People have told us they enjoy the Mix & Mingle events, but they also want more time to properly talk to someone one-on-one," says organiser Julian Bishop.

"Small Plates Speed Dates give people that chance. Food becomes a natural icebreaker, the rotations keep things moving, and the smaller guest numbers help create a more comfortable and curated experience."
