A rugby weekend not to be missed
By Dan Hutchinson
Supporters are invited down to Owen Delaney Park this weekend for a carnival of rugby and a rare chance to see the King Country Rams in action.
It’s a big rugby weekend for Taupō with hundreds of younger players in town for the annual Heartland Under 16’s Carnival and the King Country Rams playing their only Taupō game of the Bunnings Heartland Rugby Championship.
King Country Rugby Union general manager Kieran Hema says the weekend will be a big event for KCRU and the Heartland U16’s will include their first girls’ team.
The Heartland Rugby Championship game against Wairarapa Bush at 5.30pm on Saturday is also the union’s charity fundraiser.
King Country will be playing in a one-off, retro style playing jersey paying homage to the King Country Rams teams of the 90's.
Following the game everyone is invited to the lower lounge at Owen Delaney Park to watch the All Blacks take on South Africa on the big screen at 7.05pm.
At half time, selected jerseys will be auctioned off with proceeds of the auction going directly to the NZ Rugby Foundation.
The foundation supports any NZ Rugby player who has been significantly affected by injuries through the game of rugby.
Any unsold jerseys will be put up on TradeMe where the wider public will have a chance to secure one or more of the limited-edition playing jerseys.
The NZ Rugby Foundation will have representatives there to talk to guests pre-match and give an insight into the Foundation, its values and purpose.
Grant Bayley from Bayleys Taupō will be the Auctioneer with members from Bayleys assisting him providing their expertise during the auction.
