Winter Festival funds distributed

The 10th annual Malcolm Flowers Insurances Taupō Winter Festival has been hailed a huge success again this year, not only delivering a vibrant programme enjoyed by thousands, but also generating funds that are now going back into the community.
Since its inception, the festival has enabled the One Taupō Trust to distribute more than $44,000 to local families under financial hardship due to ill health.
This month a further $4000 will be going to families needing assistance to travel outside of the district for specialist medical care with the plan for a further $6000 to be distributed in the November grant funding round.
Board member Nicola de Lautour said it was worth celebrating not only the contribution that the trust could make to families, but also the continuation of the festival at a time when many towns and cities were cancelling or scaling back in this area due to lack of funding.
“We’re very fortunate to have the continued support of local sponsors, even while businesses are tightening their belts. Ticket sales were also strong across the programme — Indian Ink Theatre was a highlight, and the late addition of the movie Tinā proved particularly popular, boosting the bottom line.”
While planning for next year’s festival was still in the early stages, de Lautour said there were some exciting possibilities being considered with pop up venues and opportunities for local creatives to be more involved.
These would be staged alongside high quality visiting acts and the ever-popular traditional favourites like the ice rink and light trail.
The school holiday period coinciding with Matariki next year was also throwing up some interesting thematic prospects, de Lautour said.
