Planning to Purchase Property: What You Need to Know

Buying a home is one of the biggest financial decisions you’ll ever make — and it’s completely normal to feel a bit overwhelmed by where to start. Whether you’re a first-home buyer or looking to move up the ladder, a solid plan can make the process far less stressful (and far more achievable).

At Zest Brokers, we help clients through this every day, and we’ve learned that a successful purchase usually comes down to three key ingredients: preparation, paperwork, and perspective.

1. Preparation: Know Your Numbers
Before you start scrolling through property listings, take a clear look at your finances. How much can you realistically afford each week? What’s your deposit looking like?
If you’re using KiwiSaver, remember you may be able to withdraw funds for your first home.

2. Paperwork: Get Mortgage-Ready
Lenders want to see stability and consistency. That means regular income, manageable debts, and evidence that you can handle repayments. It’s a good idea to:

  • Review your credit score and tidy up any old debts.

  • Keep your accounts in good shape (lenders love to see good spending and saving habits).

  • Avoid taking on new loans or “buy now, pay later” accounts before you apply. That new vehicle can wait!

3. Perspective: Think Beyond the Purchase
Owning a home is exciting, but remember it also comes with ongoing costs like rates, insurance, and maintenance. Building these into your budget early helps you stay comfortable once you move in.

A Mortgage Adviser can take the stress out of all 3 stages — we handle the paperwork, compare lenders, and explain your options in plain language so you know exactly what’s possible.

Getting good advice early can make all the difference — even six months before you’re ready to buy. That’s where we come in.

First step – Call ZEST  – it is always scary stepping into the unknown, but it may just be the best step you take!

Zest Tip:

The best time to start planning for your first home is before you find it.
Preparation turns “maybe one day” into “let’s make it happen.”

Zest Brokers - Helping Taupō families - Lend. Protect. Grow

Kim Manunui

Hi, I’m Kim and I work with a great team to help individuals, as well as small and not so small businesses get their message, product and services to the world using digital media and creating wonderful websites that don’t cost the earth.

I was born in Canada, and grew up around Vancouver and the mountains of British Columbia. My love of pristine environments led me to New Zealand and eventually to the mountains, lakes and rivers of the central North Island which is home. My family’s heritage is here, and it’s from here that Korio traverses the planet.

The digital world is never static and neither are we.

And I say ‘we’ because I work with an awesome group of talented people who I gather together as required to complete a project.  Whatever your business, not-for-profit or individual needs are we gather the best team to get the job done.

Collaboratively we are creative, share sustainable values and work hard for great outcomes because that’s the buzz of satisfaction that drives us.

If you have an audience and market to reach, we can make that happen. Creative design, words that work and smart behind the scenes stuff that cuts through the online noise. We’ll design your website and then build it. We’ll manage the content as well as all your hosting needs. We can handle your online advertising so you get noticed,
and we’ll manage your social media presence so you get the clicks, likes and engagement to grow your business. All within the budget you set, because none of this needs to cost the earth.  And the job doesn’t stop when your website goes live. We are your virtual business partner.
