Time to get your fix
Repairer Brendon Amundsen celebrates another great fix.
Just because something’s broken, doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road.
That’s the motivation behind Taupō’s Repair Café which is just about at the end of its second year.
The next repair café is on September 6 (10am-1pm) at the Venture Centre at 250 Spa Rd. This time is a little more special as it is part of the 2025 Repair Festival, a nationwide celebration of fixing, mending, and extending the life of things, from September 6-14.
Taupō Repair Café co-organiser and Volunteer Great Lake Taupō manager Julian Bishop says landfills are overflowing with items that can easily be repaired and reused.
“By repairing, we keep things in use longer, cut down on waste, and share valuable skills with each other.”
The Taupō Repair Café is a community-led collective supported by Bike Taupō, Project Tongariro, TimeBank Community Garden, Taupō District Council’s Waste Management Team, and Volunteer Great Lake Taupō.
Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of volunteers donate their time and expertise, from Milos at Central Plateau Electrical and Joe at Triple D (who 3D-prints broken parts to save the day) to Andrew with heavy canvas repairs, Viv and the sewing room team, the bike repair crew, and the many general fixers.
“Everyone is sensational. The generosity of our volunteers is what makes this work.”
While repairs are generally done for free, a koha jar helps cover the cost of consumables.
Julian says community support continues to grow stronger with every gathering.
Anyone with something that needs fixing, is encouraged to register their item online and bring it along.
At the last Repair Café, 21 volunteers gave their time to help with 50 registered items, some with multiple fixes.
They repaired 38 items, eight were marked as repairable and four items were declared ‘end of life’.
