Shining a light on Tūrangi for Matariki

Dorene Mills brightens up her house for ‘Light Up for Matariki’.

Christmas has come early for Tūrangi people who love a good light display on their house.

The Light Up for Matariki competition is underway to brighten up the town and Southern Lake area in the middle of winter.

Organiser Dorene Mills, sales consultant at Tall Poppy Real Estate in Tūrangi and Southern Lake Taupō, says they would like more people to get involved in the inaugural competition.

She says the festive contest is designed to bring warmth, cheer, and community pride to celebrate Matariki—the Māori New Year.

The competition opened on June 20 and goes until July 20.

“It’s not too late to get in on the fun and register for your chance at a prize.”

A google form is available on Dorene’s Tall Poppy Facebook page for people to register their entries and be in to win a share of $500 in prizes.

Prizes are awarded for ‘overall lighting display’ and a ‘people’s choice display’.

“This competition is about bringing our community together, brightening our neighbourhoods, and lifting spirits during the coldest months.”
