Major Taupō event faces financial challenge

Support from locals is key to the success of the Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge, with last year’s event operating at a loss.

Entries are now open and Event Director Hayden Dickason is asking locals to rally behind what is one of the country’s largest cycling events, which takes place on November 28.

“The Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge has never just been for elite cyclists. It’s about getting people moving, setting goals, and creating memories together.”

Organisers are placing a strong focus on community participation in 2026 – introducing initiatives designed to encourage more families and locals to take part.

For the first time, there will be a Family Pass, with riders under 19 receiving 20% off entry fees, and members of the family who are under 15, getting 30% off.

“Whether it’s your first ride, your fifteenth, or something you want to experience alongside your kids, there’s something incredibly special about taking on Taupō together.”

A new Locals Incentive programme means Taupō residents who enter the 2026 event and successfully refer a friend, family member, or colleague, will get 25% of their entry fee refunded.

“This event belongs to the Taupō community as much as it belongs to the cycling community.

“We know how much the event means to the town - from the atmosphere it creates, to the visitors it brings into local businesses, cafes, accommodation providers, and the wider region. We’d love locals to help us introduce new people to the event and keep that momentum rolling.”

The Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge attracts thousands of riders and supporters each year, creating a festival atmosphere across the township.

Dickason says, like many events across New Zealand, recent years have brought significant financial pressures.

“Last year’s event operated at a loss, and as we work toward celebrating 50 years in 2028, support from the Taupō community has never been more important. Every entry genuinely helps ensure this iconic event continues for future generations.”

The Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge is operated by a charitable trust and has longstanding ties to the local community through the support of Lake Taupō Rotary, with surplus funds helping support community initiatives across the region.

Riders can choose from a range of event categories and distances to suit all abilities, from recreational cyclists through to experienced endurance riders.

Kim Manunui

Hi, I’m Kim and I work with a great team to help individuals, as well as small and not so small businesses get their message, product and services to the world using digital media and creating wonderful websites that don’t cost the earth.

I was born in Canada, and grew up around Vancouver and the mountains of British Columbia. My love of pristine environments led me to New Zealand and eventually to the mountains, lakes and rivers of the central North Island which is home. My family’s heritage is here, and it’s from here that Korio traverses the planet.

The digital world is never static and neither are we.

And I say ‘we’ because I work with an awesome group of talented people who I gather together as required to complete a project.  Whatever your business, not-for-profit or individual needs are we gather the best team to get the job done.

Collaboratively we are creative, share sustainable values and work hard for great outcomes because that’s the buzz of satisfaction that drives us.

If you have an audience and market to reach, we can make that happen. Creative design, words that work and smart behind the scenes stuff that cuts through the online noise. We’ll design your website and then build it. We’ll manage the content as well as all your hosting needs. We can handle your online advertising so you get noticed,
and we’ll manage your social media presence so you get the clicks, likes and engagement to grow your business. All within the budget you set, because none of this needs to cost the earth.  And the job doesn’t stop when your website goes live. We are your virtual business partner.
