Is it flying or boating?
The Vessev VS–9 electric hydrofoiling catamaran in action in Auckland.
A Taupō family has imported an electric hydrofoil boat that they will use for tours on the lake.
James and Laurel Kells, owners of Taupō Water Sports have now started Taupō Hydrofoil Tours, offering “flights” to popular destinations around the lake.
The nine-metre Vessev VS–9 electric hydrofoiling catamaran will be the first of its kind on Lake Taupō.
“As operators, we’ve always been committed to offering new experiences on Lake Taupō. Electric hydrofoiling on the VS–9 will allow visitors to appreciate the lake’s unique spirit in a new way, while the vessel’s zero-emissions, low-wake technology honours the environment that makes this region so special.”
The VS–9 flies above the water on carbon fibre foils, for a silent, emissions-free journeys. It is one of the only commercial foiling vessels in service around the world.
Eric Laakmann, Vessev CEO, says New Zealand has long been a global leader in foiling, notably with Amercia’s Cup boats.
“We’re immensely proud that companies like Taupō Hydrofoiling Tours are partnering with us to showcase this transformative way to experience the water.”
With a cruise speed of 25 knots and range of up to 90km, the VS–9 consumes 90% less energy than a traditional vessel of similar size.
