Strong winds are fanning a fire on the outskirts of Taupō.

Police are urging motorists to stay away from the area with Broadlands Road to Miro Street closed due to the emergency response.

Helicopters are working to douse the grass and scrub fire.

Police says the road is closed to facilitate safe points for emergency services to work from and traffic management is in place.

Police continue to urge the public and motorists to avoid the area.

A separate accident on the corner of Spa Rd and Tauhara Rd is believed to be minor but motorists should give the area a wide berth if possible.

The fire appears to be in a scenic reserve to the east of Tauhara Golf Course and behind Ross White Panel Beaters.
