Family mourns loss of only child

An Indian student died after getting into trouble in the water at Whakamoenga Point, Acacia Bay on Sunday afternoon.

Police confirmed they were called to Whakamoenga Point at about 3.20pm after a person was pulled from the water unconscious.

“Sadly, despite best efforts, the person died at the scene.”

News website IndianNewslink is reporting the victim as Shaurya Sriram, a 21-year-old student at the University of Auckland, quoting several sources close to the family.

“Family, friends and community leaders are mourning the loss of Shaurya Sriram, a 21-year-old University of Auckland Engineering student, who drowned during a holiday at Lake Taupo on Sunday, April 5, 2026,” Indian Newslink posted on a public Facebook post.

“Efforts are being coordinated to support his grieving parents in India with the $18,000 cost of repatriation. This heartbreaking event serves as a vital reminder to prioritise water safety at all times.”

Police say the death will be referred to the Coroner.
