A Taupō skydiver has broken the New Zealand record for the highest speed in freefall.
Mason Holden has just competed in the FAI World Speed Skydiving Championships in Arizona.
He finished 29th out of 47 competitors, but he did achieve the New Zealand record with a highest average speed of 465.54km/h, and a top speed of 483.62km/h.
Speed skydiving is the fastest self-propelled sport on earth, with athletes diving head-first from altitude to reach incredible speeds before deploying their parachutes.
Mason is based at Taupō Sport Skydivers, where he looks after training.
