A fun run for the lake front

Taupō’s lake front paths are a popular place for a run.

A brand new endurance event takes place on Saturday with Two Mile Bay Sailing Club hosting the Pillar to Pou.

The event is organised by Rochelle and Torben Landl and is designed for people of all running abilities – from beginners to the ultra competitive - and follows a 7.3km course from Two Mile Bay to the Te Ātea Space and back again.

Over six hours, individuals or teams of up to six people complete as many laps as they can, either running or walking. Entries close on June 5 for those wanting to take part.

“It's kind of like a new expression of the old 24-hour relay from the 90s where you would just do as many laps as you can, tagging in, tagging out,” Rochelle says.

There will be various prizes up for grabs including one for the fastest lap and one for the lap that is closest to the overall average time.

She says they are seeing a lot more movement along the lakefront these days with runners, walkers and cyclists.

“So, it felt like an opportunity to provide an event that was open to all different abilities in quite a festival-type format.”

There will be live music, special warm-up and recovery zones, and a fuel and hydration station with sponsored products for people to eat and drink all day.

“So it's really to be a fun six-hour period and then celebrations beyond that.”
